Woman’s fury as sister books wedding for week after hers and ruins her honeymoon

A woman has fumed at her sister after she booked a destination wedding for the week after her own – and then told her she couldn’t have her honeymoon at the same hotel

Your wedding day is said to be one of the most important days of your life and it’s usually an event that sees your entire family come together to support you.

But one mum has been forced to rethink her wedding plans after her sister decided to get married just one week after her in a destination wedding in New York City.

Posting anonymously on Mumsnet, the woman explained she wasn’t worried about her sister “stealing her thunder” but instead had concerns over her finances – as she wouldn’t be able to afford to stay in New York when she had just paid out so much money for her own wedding.

She wrote: “I’ve had my wedding date booked for 18 months after being with my partner for five years. My sister became engaged over Christmas after a year of dating and straight away booked her wedding in New York one week after mine.

“What hurts is that she didn’t pull me to one side and explain why they had done this, and instead they announced their plans over Christmas dinner and added she wouldn’t be having bridesmaids when she’s one of mine.

“Initially, I wasn’t bothered about her stealing my thunder. I was more concerned about how I was going to afford this. We said we’d find a way to come but this would mean postponing our honeymoon.

“My mum offered to pay as long as we had spending money, we spoke about how we would pay her back in the future.”

In order to make her sister’s wedding day work for her, the mum and her partner decided they would stay in New York City for a little while longer and roll the wedding and their honeymoon into one event.

But when her sister sent over the flight information, she realised she had only booked them in for two days.

She added: “A few days ago my sister sent through flight details and I realised we would only be there for two days. I phoned her to explain we would need longer, as a newly married couple we were going to extend it into a mini-moon holiday.

“Once she had heard the word holiday she became very rude and explained it wasn’t a holiday but her wedding and she accused us of only going because it was free! We could only get out there with my mum paying because she booked it one week after ours!”

The woman said she tried to explain things to her sister but received no response – and has now decided to cancel the flight to New York for her sister’s wedding, as well as uninvite her to her own the week before.

She said: “I tried to get past this and called her to explain why I used the word ‘holiday’, ie: we’d just got married, we have three kids to figure out logistics for, we’d be exhausted running around, etc. Anyway, she ignored my call. We’ve been messaging but she doesn’t seem to acknowledge she’s done anything wrong.

“I’ve since instructed her to cancel the flights, now we can have a warm honeymoon anyway! She’s also been uninvited from our wedding. I don’t know how else I can deal with this without some acknowledgement from her?!”

Commenters on the post were divided – as some said her sister’s behaviour was “crazy”, but others claimed the mum was creating “unnecessary drama”.

One person wrote: “I think that’s absolutely crazy behaviour from her! I would think it weird if a friend booked their wedding a week after mine, never mind a sister!”

But another disagreed, stating: “She is not stealing your thunder, she is getting on with her life. If you don’t change this into unnecessary drama then everyone can have a lovely time with more to celebrate.”

While a third said: “It’s really inconsiderate of her, especially as your date has been in the diary for a long time.”

And someone else added: “I think your reaction is over the top. I can kind of understand being a bit upset but not to the extent of uninviting her!”
