What should you wear on a rainy wedding day?

The best fabrics for wedding guest dress

To survive a rainy wedding, the key is in the type of fabric you’ll wear. You will want something that doesn’t get heavy with the rain or take time to dry. Fabrics like velvet, wool, and denim are prime examples of what not to wear in the rain if you’re wondering. Even cotton, though it’s light and quick to dry, it will leave you looking like an underwear model if you get wet —Everyone will be able to see what’s under your dress or shirt. So, unless you knew it would rain and your cotton jumpsuit was still our go-to because you have your umbrella in hand, try the following:

• Polyester
• Nylon
• Silk
• Lace

These four fabrics will handle the wetness better should your umbrella suddenly turn up. Lace is surprisingly the best option here because, in most cases, it will not look like it’s been soaked at all. Plus, lace is incredibly romantic and chic; who knows, you may find your beau at this wedding.

The best outfit for a rainy wedding day

In winter, summer, or spring, when it rains, you need a coverup. The blazer is your best friend. It’s flattering, and it works well with skirts, dresses, pants, jumpsuits —you name it. Paired up with a cute clutch bag and nude heels, it will leave you still looking polished. If you’re a scarf person, this rainy day may turn out to be your best yet. There are many fashionable scarves available that will complement your outfit while also keeping you warm. You can also go for a stylish poncho or shawl, especially if the weather is a bit cold. 

If you’re wearing a floral dress, make sure your blazer, scarf, or poncho is a solid colour or, at the very least, doesn’t clash in pattern with your ensemble. You still want to look fashionable, even in the rain!

The length of your dress or pants also matters. You want to avoid wearing a maxi dress or skirt that will get caught in the mud and make you look drab or even cause you to stumble. Go for knee-highs or a midi. Choose ankle-length pants if you’re wearing pants. This way, you’ll avoid the sticky-mud situation. 

And the shoes? Suede is the most obvious no-no. Sandals, Converse, and similar shoes will also be problematic on a drippy day. Try leather (or faux leather) chunky shoes to keep the rain at bay and your feet above the mud. Ankle boots are the most ideal. 

If you like to accessorise, keep the showers from stopping you. Jewellery always adds a feminine feel to any outfit. Add a colourful handbag and matching lipstick, and you’re good to go. If you want to wear your hair down, remember to carry hair clips or a scrunchie to tie it up when the drizzle starts.
