My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023): Cast, Premiere, Filming Location

After it was released in 2002 My Big Fat Greek Wedding became one of the highest grossing romantic comedies of all time. It was a major feat for the independent film that became such a blockbuster.

Remember quotes like, “Toula, there’s two kinds of people: Greeks and everybody else who wish they were Greeks.” And who could forget Toula’s dad Gus who was convinced that the secret to life’s ills was to “Put some Windex on it.”

Nia Vardolos, who wrote and starred in the film and its sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, took to social media to share her big news…

“I have an announcement, we are in Greece filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” she said in a brief video from her hotel room on Twitter and Instagram. “We are filming in the beautiful Plaka of Athens.”

In the video, Vardolos, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the original film, also had an important Greek word that she wanted to teach everyone watching.

“I want to teach you your first Greek word, which is e-ski̱nothéti̱s, and what that means is director. And guess who the director is?,” she excitedly announced. “Me!”

The cast of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 has not been revealed just yet. But since they were in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, chances are the Portokalos family will return. Especially, we predict, for a wedding in Greece!

The irresistible Portokolas family includes Nia Vardalos as Fotoula ‘Toula’ Portokalos-Miller, John Corbett as Ian Miller, Toula’s husband, Elena Kampouris as Paris Miller, Lainie Kazan as Maria Portokalos, Toula’s mother, Andrea Martin as Theia Voula, Toula’s aunt.

Why Michael Constantine won’t be in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s Windex-loving dad, Kostas ‘Gus’ Portokalos, died in August 2021. In a moving tribute to him on Instagram back in September, Vardalos shared a photo with some of her Portokalos family who gathered to pay tribute to him. “He had told me he wouldn’t be able to join us for the third film and his wish was that we go on,” she revealed. “I wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael’s decision and will always treasure his last messages to me, hoping we were filming soon.”

In My Big Fat Greek Wedding Toula Portokalos, (Nia Vardalos), is 30, unmarried and the object of great concern for her big, loud and loving Greek-American family who worries that she is still single.  When she falls hard for Ian Miller, (John Corbett), who is most certainly not Greek, she has an even bigger problem.

Back in April, when the film celebrated its 20th anniversary, Vardalos, shared the inspiring backstory behind the making of the movie that almost didn’t happen. Told by agents and managers that the script wasn’t good, she transformed the piece into a solo show for the stage.  “@RitaWilson saw the play and said, ‘this should be a movie,” Tweeted Vardolos. “I handed her my screenplay, this creator & producer got the film made with me as the lead. We premiered in 106 theaters, expanded to more, ran for over a year.”

In the 2016 sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) are married with a teenage daughter, Paris. A high school senior, Paris feels smothered by her family and Greek traditions. The family, who has been hit hard by the recession, also have to contend with a secret about Toula’s parents, Maria and Gus, and their marriage. Toula is also faced with letting her daughter grow up. And oh yes, there’s a big wedding at the end.

While Nia Vardalos has not revealed much about the plot of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, this past September she revealed on Instagram that the script was finished. “And no Toula and Ian are not grandparents!” she added. While both prior films, contained a wedding, chances are there will be nuptials in My Big Fat Green Wedding 3. According to Deadline, sources have revealed to them that this third sequel will involve a wedding in Greece for Paris, the daughter of  Toula (Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett).
