Couple gets Covid at wedding, shares Covid experience on honeymoon

A newlywed couple struck down with Covid-19 on their honeymoon has been forced to defend themselves after they were accused of holding a “super spreader” wedding and travelling despite being sick.

The American couple, who have been documenting their Covid experience on their TikTok account, said they tested positive to the virus days after their July 24 wedding when they were already on their honeymoon in Mexico.

In a series of videos, the newlyweds shared their reaction to returning positive results and described their symptoms from their hotel room bed.

But they were forced to post a video to “clear the air” after their @covidhoneymoon account attracted an avalanche of furious responses, accusing the couple of being “super spreaders” and irresponsibly holding a wedding and travelling while sick.

In the explainer video, the couple – who are vaccinated – said they did not know they had Covid-19 until they were already in Mexico.

“We got married last Saturday, it was a great wedding, lots of fun, all our family and friends there,” the groom said in the August 1 video.

“We took a day to rest and then we flew to Mexico, we felt fine, we felt great. Then about a day or two after being here, we started to find out that people from our wedding were getting Covid.”

The couple said at that point, 20 of their wedding guests had tested positive. They said by that stage they were already on their honeymoon, and got tested while they were in Mexico.

“We would not have come here if we were sick,” the groom said.

“We wouldn’t have done any of this, we would have stayed home. We were getting tested because you have to get a test before you leave … before you go back to America you have to test negative. That’s why we got tested.

“On the day we got tested we were feeling a little iffy, but we just though it was allergies or a cold. Since testing positive our symptoms have gotten a little worse, we’ve started to feel bad, but we’re both vaccinated. We’re checking in with our family and our friends who got sick at our wedding.”

The couple also addressed earlier criticism their videos appeared to make light of the seriousness of the wedding outbreak and the pandemic generally, because they often appeared to be smiling.

“We would never make fun of it,” the groom said. “We’re not flippantly going around trying to spread Covid. It’s kinda crazy people would think we would do that.

“We’ve been locked in our room, except when we were moved to this current room. We’ve just been laying around watching Netflix and eating room service. We’re not making light of the situation.”

Some commentators continued to accuse the couple of holding a super spreader wedding and for not taking Covid seriously.

But many defended the couple, saying they did all the right things and wishing them a speedy recovery.

“How are people mad at them?” someone said. “They were vaccinated. They got married. They followed all the protocols.”

“Thinking of you both, you didn’t do any of this on purpose and I get it, don’t worry about what other people say.”

In subsequent videos the couple showed the lockdown room they were moved to after testing positive, and explained how their insurance was covering their extended stay.

“We will have to stay here until we have tested negative,” the groom said.

They said they passed the time watching Netflix and playing cards.

They also demonstrated what it was like to order room service while in quarantine, a process that requires them to call in their order 90 minutes in advance and have the food delivered to their door along with garbage bags and disposable plates and cutlery.

They also shared their experience eating dinner after they lost their senses of taste.

“Bland. I can’t taste anything,” the groom said after eating a french fry. His wife also said she couldn’t taste any of the burger she was eating.

The couple also admitted they didn’t expect attention in their videos to “blow up” as much as it did.

“We had a friend say, ‘Make a TikTok, see what happens’,” the groom said, saying they would continue to share their Covid experience on the platform.
